Clavos are the square headed nails you see set into old Spanish and carriage style doors. They are decorative, not structural, and they are the single cheapest way to take a plain door and make it look like it has been on the house for a hundred years. Handles and knockers do the same work at eye level, where people actually see them.

Most people order the three together so the finish matches, which matters more than anything else on this page. Hardware bought from three different places in three different blacks will look like exactly that on the door.

Finishes

Powder coat is what makes the difference outdoors. A painted finish on a west facing door in a Sacramento summer will chalk and fade in a few seasons, and powder coat will not. Pick a finish against the door color rather than on its own, because the same black reads completely differently on a dark stained door than it does on a light painted one.

Sizing it to your door

The mistake people make ordering hardware online is buying pieces that are too small. Hardware that looks big on a screen looks like jewelry once it is up on a sixteen foot door across the yard.
