Wood Garage Doors in Sacramento, CA

Custom wood doors are the ones we like building most, and for a lot of our customers they are the reason they found us in the first place. A wood door on the front of a house does something a steel door cannot, which is look like it belongs to that house instead of having been picked out of a catalog. The two below came off our own benches here in Sacramento.

The style most people are after is the carriage house look, doors that appear to swing open from the middle the way a barn door would. Almost nobody actually wants them to swing. Swing out doors need clearance in front of them, they fight you on a windy day, and the opener for one is a different animal altogether. So what we build is a door that reads as a carriage door from the street and runs up an overhead track like any other door. The seam down the middle is there, the strap hinges and the handles are there, the whole look is there. It just goes up instead of out.

After the style, the next thing to settle is stain or paint, and that is more of a look decision than a money decision even though the paint grade costs less. Stain leaves the grain showing, which is what you want when the house already has wood in it somewhere, a wood front door or exposed beams or cedar trim. Paint gives you a flat even face and lets you match the door to the trim exactly. Neither one is the better door. Most of these doors get glass in the top section, and on a wood door the lites can be divided however you want, because we are building the frame anyway and are not working off a factory list of window patterns. The hardware matters as much as the door on this style. Strap hinges and handles are what make somebody read it as a carriage door rather than a wood door with a line down the middle, and we make ours by hand. Keeping a wood door looking right

A wood door in this valley takes real sun. Summer afternoons on a west facing garage are hard on any finish, and a stained door is going to want recoating every few years, sooner if it sits out there with no shade at all. That is the trade you make for the look, and we would rather tell you now than have you find out in year four. A painted door is easier to keep up that way. Either one, built properly and kept after, will outlast several steel doors.

Once your door is on the bench you are welcome to come by and see it, and most people come while it is being stained so they can look at the color on their own door instead of on a sample chip.
