A jackshaft opener does not hang from the ceiling like the openers most people are used to. It bolts to the wall right next to the door and turns the torsion shaft directly, so there is no motor sitting over your car and no rail running down the middle of the garage. If you park a truck in there, keep a lift or tall shelving, or you have ever had to duck around that rail while carrying something, getting the ceiling back is usually the reason people ask us about this one.

Because it turns the same shaft the springs are already on, it is not fighting the door the way a rail opener does. There is no long rail, no chain and no belt, so there is less in it to wear out and less stress on the door itself over the years. It is also the quietest of the openers we install, and it will pick up a heavy wood or insulated door without straining, which is why we put them on a lot of the custom doors that come out of our shop.

The price is $1,500 and that is the final number, with the opener, the labor and the tax all in it. It comes with one remote and a battery backup so the door still goes up when the power is out, and you can add a camera or a keypad for outside the door if you want them.

One thing to check first

A jackshaft only works on a door that has a torsion spring on a shaft above the opening. If your door has extension springs stretched along the tracks on either side, this opener has nothing to turn and will not go on. Most doors we see in Sacramento are torsion, but it is worth knowing before you get your heart set on it, and we will tell you which one you have when we come out.

If the ceiling space is not something you need, a chain drive or a belt drive will serve you just fine and cost you less.
